This blog is not all about running but I do consider myself a runner. The irony is that I haven't been able to set out for a run since I thought I had damaged my hamstring in late December 2006. What it turned out to be, after having an MRI scan, was a prolapsed disc (slipped disc) [see http://www.patient.co.uk/showdoc/27000885/ ] that was pressing on the nerve root and it just wasn't getting better so I had surgery to cut out the prolapsed part of the disc. I am now recovering at home and have another four weeks before I can return to work full-time.
I have to confess I did not do much research into the procedure as I felt the more I knew the less likely I was to be able to go through with it. I just decided that the pain was too much and the surgeon would fix it, did I really need to know what it was all about?
My blog from here on in is going to be about me getting back to running. At the moment I walk for up to an hour sometimes into the village across the common and sometimes around the National Trust land we have on our doorstep. We also have some parks and woods that before all the back pain started I would run. I still think running is a few weeks away but I can't wait to get the running shoes back on and get out the house to pound round the local pavements and trails. Early mornings were my favourite time before everywhere got too busy, particularly traffic.
Some bad news and a welcome challenge
